Cast Plate Anodes
Harbor Zinc Anodes meet military specification MIL-A-18001K, MIL-DTL-18001L and ASTM B 418 Type 1 alloy. HARBALUM Aluminum Anodes conform to MIL-A-24779 alloy.
Zinc and aluminum anodes are generally used in salt and brackish waters where resistivity is generally lower. Typical uses are for the hulls of vessels, offshore pipelines, seawalls, pilings, production platforms, in marine heat exchangers, on boat propellers and rudders.
Aluminum anodes have several advantages, such as a lighter weight and higher capacity than zinc. However, their electrochemical behavior is not considered as reliable as zinc in lower levels of brackish waters, and greater care must be taken in how they are used. Aluminum anodes may passivate where chloride concentration is low.
Anodes are necessary because galvanic corrosion occurs when metals of different potentials are electrically attached in marine environments. “Harbor” sacrificial anodes can be manufactured for a variety of installation methods of bolt-on, weld-on or screw-on styles. The anode plate is bolted to the hull and the wire is attached to a thru-hull fitting.
Cast plate anodes with copper wires are typically used for wood vessel applications.
